When my mother, Bettyann, was transitioning from cancer of the maxiallary sinus her trigeminal nerve allowed her to open her mouth about the width of a straw. She lived in Delaware and I lived in Wisconsin. On a September morning we talked on the phone. Her words to me were jumbled because of the closure of her mouth. That evening my mother crossed. It was a true sense of emptiness and loss because I did not understand what she said to me, though I knew her final last words to me were important. With the loving loss of my mother's final words, in my heart, I feel the love given in the work that I do in being the voice for the silent. |
